Avocado Shortage Averted: US Lifts Ban On Mexican Avocado Imports
It’s no secret that Boomers love to tease Millennials for their love of avocado toast. But in all seriousness, avocados are amazing. They are quite tasty on their own, but then they also add a dynamic twist to any dish.
However, there was an expected shortage of the humble avocado on the horizon. As of the 12th of February, the US government decided to suspend importing avocados from Mexico after safety inspectors from the U.S. were verbally threatened, according to the New York Times.

This might not seem like such a big issue, as California is a state in which avocados are grown. However, the Golden State’s avocados are not yet in season. And with the current stopping of imports from Mexico, grocery stores and restaurants will be feeling the pinch of fewer avocados.
According to one TikTokker, V Spehar, host of the popular Under The Desk News TikTok account, the effects will be felt approximately 10 days “before you’ll start to feel the pinch of the Mexican avocado ban.”

As V Spehar noted, any avocados that were already in transit at the time of the ban will still make their way to US stores. But since many of the imports are scheduled two weeks prior to their arrival, that would leave us with a very narrow window of time before we find ourselves “avocado-less,” as Spehar explained.
Given the news, many people were bracing themselves for an avocado-less kitchen in the coming weeks, but that may not be necessary after all.

According to the New York Times, the US Department of Agriculture said the ban will “remain in place for as long as necessary to ensure the appropriate actions are taken, to secure the safety of [Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service] personnel working in Mexico.”
It seems the appropriate actions have been taken because the government just announced it will allow avocado imports from Mexico to resume.
