Aimee is an 18-year-old Twitter user who came to the app with a very important question recently.

She wanted to know more about the handles on our car ceilings and what they are for.

It makes perfect sense to us, of course. Why wouldn’t a teenager want to know more about this common item? “Serious question, what the f— is this for?” she asked in a now-hidden tweet.

Profane language aside, we concur. We have never known what this handle was for and we typically used it as a way to calm our nerves when we were sharing a ride with a speed racer type.

Of course, there were lots of jokey theories on Twitter. “to keep your armpits fresh when you roll the windows down on a hot day,” one user suggested.

“For my mom to dramatically grab when I’m going 26 in a 25,” said Taylor Myers, a Pittsburgh native and college student. That’s the one that made us laugh the most because our parents act the exact same way when we pick up the pace a little bit. However, we have the sneaking suspicion that this is not what this handle is being made for.

Twitter seems to disagree with that idea, though. The handle, which is known as the “oh s—” handle, is actually being used for the aforementioned purposes.

We thought for sure that we would get some sort of complex explanation that made it all make sense but apparently not! Meanwhile, the nonpotty mouths out there will want to know if there is a different name for the handle.

It’s now called the “Jesus bar” by those who do not wish to use cuss words and are looking to avoid such unpleasantness. No matter what you would like to call these bars, one thing is for sure. Our lives are never going to be the same ever again. We know too much now to ever turn back, as dramatic as this may seem to some of our readers.

Maybe one day we will receive another explanation that predates the usage of these handles for calming one’s nerves in the face of a speedy driver.
