TikTok isn’t just for teenagers looking to come up with brand new dances. It can actually be an informative place for people to share their life hacks with one another. I particularly enjoy the cooking TikTok clips where people share quite recipes or cool kitchen hacks to make things easier. One of the latest TikTok hacks involving onions is nothing short of genius.

Many recipes call for onions. Let’s face it, onions are a kitchen staple, and they really do make foods tasty. However, getting them from their skin to the pan without shedding tears can be a little tricky.

Even with a food processor doing most of the chopping for me, cutting up an onion still makes me cry. And I’m not the only one. I’m sure many of us can’t help but cry whenever we slice an onion.

That is why this particular TikTok hack sounded like such a lifesaver. The poster claimed it was a great way to chop up an onion with virtually no mess – but more importantly – no tears.

The hack is brought to us by TikTok user, @scubeskitchen. He shows his users how to prepare onions with three simple items: one small resealable plastic bag, one large resealable plastic bag, and a meat tenderizer.

All you need to do is place your onion inside the small resealable plastic bag, place that bag inside the larger resealable plastic bag – don’t seal either of them – and then take your meat tenderizer to it and, for lack of a better term, smash the s*** out of it!

Once you’ve smashed the onion to bits, you can simply pull out the onion skin in large, removable chunks, while the rest of the onion remains perfectly chopped. Then, you have the perfect diced onion to add to your cooking.

Unfortunately, those who tried the hack didn’t quite get the results that @scubeskitchen promised. In fact, a writer with Reader’s Digest shared that their onion turned to “utter mush.” Yum.

One person commented, “You didn’t show us the part where you cut it with a knife and then stuffed in the bag.”

So, if you try the hack, don’t get your hopes too high. Then again, if onion mush is what you’re going for, it may be the perfect trick to use.
