Thanks to this service, we are able to utilize satellite imaging and explore any corner of the world that we desire. Some of these images are also three-dimensional and they can be seen from our computers.

Now, there is a new feature that is sure to get a lot of use (at least in our house). We have the chance to see just how much our neighborhoods have changed over the years.

The time-lapse imagery unfolds over the course of the last 37 years, giving us an amazing depiction of the passing of time. Google successfully sourced 24 million satellite photos that were taken over the past four decades and they have all been added to this tool. According to Google’s blog post, this feature is meant to show “not just problems but also solutions.”

This tool is also designed to provide us with increased access to “mesmerizingly beautiful natural phenomena that unfold over decades,” according to the blog post. Google is planning to continuously add images to the tool over the next 10 years as well, so we will get to see how much our neighborhoods change and shift.

NASA, the US Geological Survey’s Landsat program, and the European Union’s Copernicus program are all working hand in hand with Google on the project. Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab is going to be powering the tool in the meantime.

To get started, head to your browser and check out the following link: g.co/Timelapse. From there, you can check out any place on the planet with the “search the planet” search bar.

Once an address is selected, Google Earth lets us see the time-lapse photos. It is truly a sight to behold. The plus and minus buttons are used as a means of zooming in and out, so that we have the chance to see everything up close. It’s the type of feature that is sure to bring hours of enjoyment.
