Our key ring tends to be pretty heavy and we presume most of our readers are in the same boat in this regard. You need to have your vehicle keys, house keys, and any other keys that you need all on the same fob.

After all, the last thing that any of us wants to do is have to fumble around with a wide range of different key rings on an everyday basis.

However, there are certain dangers that are associated with keeping all of your keys on the same ring, dangers that you simply may not have been aware of. As it turns out, the key or fob for your vehicle needs to be on a separate ring. Of course, you are wondering why that would be the case and we are here to explain.

The reasoning is more simple than you may have realized.

“Too many keys on your key ring can damage the sensitive interior components of your ignition cylinder. Your ignition cylinder really wasn’t engineered to hold much weight on it, and when you hang a heavy key ring from your ignition, every bump, turn, and vibration will slowly but surely wear down the delicate inner elements,” says Jack McKenzies with AutoAccessoriesGarage.com, according to Family Handy Man. We are going to go ahead and take his word for it on this one.

The strain that is placed on the fob by all of the extra keys could leave you locked out or you could have serious ignition issues. For these reasons, the practice should be avoided.

Other drivers have already experienced these types of horror stories. Hopefully, you won’t ever have to go through that. “My husband, years ago, had probably three dozen keys on his ring,” explains Lauren Milligan, according to Homemaking. “The weight shifted around the ignition so badly that while he was driving, he could pull the key out of the ignition and continue to drive. Before that happened, my husband’s mechanic warned him plenty of times about how his key ring was too heavy.”

The more you know.
