If you are somebody who loves to travel, you realize just how many opportunities we have to see the world. Travel isn’t only about the places we can see, it’s also about the places we can stay while we are seeing them.

If you happen to be somebody that enjoys staying in hotels, or perhaps if you are somebody who stays in them for business, then there is a sweet spot in the hotel you need to know about.

According to the New York Post, staying higher than that spot is going to put you at risk but staying lower than that spot is going to put you at risk as well.

According to the post, travel expert Lloyd Figgins revealed one of the biggest things that many of us tend to overlook is the possibility of a fire.

He says: “When you arrive in a hotel, you’re in an unfamiliar environment which you think is safe. The problem comes that if there were to be a fire alarm go off, what do we do next?”

Figgins then goes on to list a number of things that we may not have ever given thought to know. These include such things as, where is the fire exit, how do we get to it, is it going to be blocked or is it already locked, and will it take us someplace safe?

When you go to a hotel, one of the first things you should always do is to walk between the fire escapes. Count how many doors are between you and the fire escape that will be closest to you.

In addition, he said: “Make sure you are staying between the second and fourth stories of the hotel because fire department ladder rarely reaches above fourth story. Anything below this is targeted by burglars.”

There are also other things to consider that will keep you safe, such as not saying your room number out loud while you’re in the hotel and the hotel staff should write down the room number instead of telling you what it is at the desk.

According to the author of Travel Survival Guide, there are many criminals who are attracted to hotels because people are vulnerable and so are their possessions.

In fact, those criminals may hang out near the desk so that they can hear where you are staying and they may even target your room specifically. They look for you later in the hotel bar or restaurant so they know that they can have some quiet time while they go to your room and steal your things.

There are some things you can do to protect yourself, such as bringing a door wedge or simply protecting yourself by staying on floors 2-4.
