A sinkhole opening up in the middle of a pool party sounds like the opening credits to a climate disaster movie. However, in a very terrifying turn of events, this scenario was a real-life occurrence at a pool party in Karmei Yosef, Israel.

The pool party had started out like any other pool party in summer: friends had gotten together at someone’s home. There was music, there was fun, and people were in the water enjoying themselves – then all of a sudden, there was a shift in the water.

Within seconds, everything was changing and the ground beneath the pool started to open up. The water quickly rushed down the hole, taking people with it. While most of the guests were able to get away from the danger, sadly, one party goer was swept down into the sinkhole. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive the ordeal.

According to the Daily Mail, a lifeguard that was at the party, Aviv Bublil, talked about the sinkhole experience, explaining that there was a vortex inside the pool. It didn’t look normal and she called for everyone to get out of the pool.

Bublil explained that as soon as she knew that something bad was happening, she “screamed” for all the guests to get out of the pool. At the time, there were six guests in the water. She said that at first, it took them a minute to catch onto what was happening. Most of the people assumed it was “some kind of game.”

Bublil further added that the water left the pool “in a matter of seconds. It’s not something that looks normal, that’s why I realized it’s some kind of unusual event I don’t usually see in pools.”

Bublil recalled how there were two people that got swept into the sinkhole. She had wanted to jump in and try to rescue them, however, she was stopped by other people at the party. And sadly, it became clear to Bublil that even if she’d tried her best, she would not have been able to reach them in time.

According to WHAS11, one professor, Shmuel Marco, from the Department of Geophysics at Tel Aviv University, explained that the collapse of the pool was more than likely due to a human factor rather than a geological one.

Marco said of sink holes, “They do exist in the Dead Sea area, where there is a thick layer of salt below the surface a few meters deep, and when fresh water seeps in they dissolve the salt below the surface and an underground space is created and the surface collapses inside.” The sinkhole was likely caused by “water infiltration.”

The sinkhole was caught on video, and it has now gone viral on Twitter. You can watch it down below:
