“Tearless” Onions Are Coming To The UK
Anyone who has ever had to cook with onions has probably dealt with the usual tearing up that occurs when it comes time to dice them up.
It’s a seemingly unavoidable problem that most of us have learned to live with, but not to worry! There is a solution on the way and it is closer than you may think. “Sunions” are here to save the day for all the teary-eyed chefs out there.

If you have been paying close attention, these onions are already available in a number of locations in the United States. The United Kingdom is now getting in on the fun, as they will be providing them at their Waitrose supermarkets as soon as possible.
As you would expect, it took many, many years to successfully breed enough onion varieties to create the tear-free option. In fact, scientists have spent 30 years perfecting these volatile compounds.
Thanks to their efforts, the compounds that are most “responsible for tearing and pungent flavor” have been diminished, providing a sweet and mild onion without all of the usual boohooing. It’s quite the advancement and it is one that we never could have possibly expected.

“We understand how appealing tearless onions are to our customers, which is why we’re delighted to launch Sunions in selected stores and via Waitrose.com from January 18,” said Waitrose buying manager Paul Bidwell, according to Yahoo!. “They’re ideal for taking the tears out of the kitchen; the sweetness of this type of onion lends itself perfectly to a variety of dishes, from salads to hot meals.”
These onions have been priced at £1.50 GBP (approximately $2 USD), making them a great choice for anyone who is looking to sidestep the sadness.

UK residents will be able to head to their local Waitrose supermarket, starting on January 18. They will be sold in three packs, which is a definite shift from the way that onions are usually packaged.
We are torn on this one. Onions were fine as is and we were okay with the occasional tear. We never thought that this sort of thing was even possible but this is the way of the world now. Where do you stand on this one? Are you going to be seeking out tear-free onions anytime soon? Let us know!
